A Sure Bet: Gaming – Employee Benefits


The gaming industry requires high energy and enthusiastic employees supported by a comprehensive benefits program. Our client opened their casino in July 2011 and wanted to offer employees the best total benefit package in a cost-effective way. They projected to ultimately hire 1,200 employees – and interview over 12,000 – but to attract top candidates, they needed to solidify the benefit program details.

Our client required a firm quote for benefits to ensure it fit within budget. However, our insurance partners require basic demographic and salary information to quote Life, AD&D, Disability, Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits. Because the casino was new, actual employee information wasn’t available.


Our industry experience led us to review the benefits of other casino clients and design a basic benefits profile. We collaborated with our client’s HR and Finance teams to benchmark the employee profile against other employers in the area that we identified as their most likely competition for experienced employees in the casino/hospitality industry. This benchmarking and industry insight allowed us to make minor adjustments to the benefit design.


Equipped with this information and our strong working relationships, we met with several major insurance carriers’ top executives to discuss a reasonable method to provide sample data and demographics. This established which carriers would be the most likely partners.

We developed an action plan and marketed the benefit design to obtain several competitive quotes. We had the opportunity to negotiate additional cost benefits by packaging several benefits together with one partner. We also negotiated several free health improvement screening and incentive programs to enhance the competitive nature of the benefits program.

Once the benefit design and insurance partners were solidified, we focused on the casino’s contribution strategy. They planned to offer two medical plan options, so we promoted a “defined contribution” methodology to allow the casino’s cost share to be competitive and somewhat “revenue neutral” to their budget.
